How to obtain the best MPG by simply checking and maintenance of your car battery

This article continues the series (DIY) repair eco car maintenance tips and tricks us.

If you think that automobile batteries are as batteries, a toy car is almost the same, except the common full-size car does not use the car battery to create movement. That part is covered by the internal combustion engine. At least until hybrid cars entered the picture.

The battery is an astonishing electrical device. This element of being without mobile parts is an essential part of the car. Read on to see how you can keep running under the best conditions of tip with little fuss.

How does it work?

The car battery is a rechargeable device that generates electricity from a chemical reaction. These batteries are commonly referred to as SLI (Starter-iluminaciĆ³n - lit) batteries because they are primarily used for these purposes.

Batteries of generating electric power from a chemical process. These batteries usually use a method of lead-acid. Inside of the battery are six cell galvanic of lead and lead oxide. Each of these cells generate 2.1 volts each, with a total of 12.6 Volt. These cells are immersed in water of sulfuric acid electrolyte solution and 65% 35%.

When cells interact with electrolyte solution, electrons are free to move between the plates, which creates electricity. This has the additional effect of changing the composition of cells, creation of lead sulphate.

This process is reversed as it will recharge the battery by the alternator. This time lead sulphate is returned to its state of lead and lead oxide.

Faulty batteries can seriously degrade performance and shorten the useful life of your car.

How to check your batteries

To check the battery, follow these steps:

Remove covers the battery (if you have). Some lead battery acid can be sealed so skip this step. Largest lead-acid batteries are rechargeable.

Look inside the battery. Check status of plates and especially water level.

Fill in the water. If water does not reach the top of the plates, recharge with distilled water. Do not fill the last battery cells.

Clean the terminals of deposits and accumulation. To prevent electrocution, remove the battery terminals before clearing out sulfur. Make sure no contact with the material on your skin. CAUTION. Use a cloth and a used toothbrush.

Dry battery. Drying drums with a lint-free cloth.

Coat of arms of terminals with petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion.

Check the cables for wear or damage. Replace or sealed with insulating, if the damage is less tape.

Check the case of cracking. Replace if they are serious cracks regardless of electrical performance.

If you find weak to Dim the lights, use a tester of the battery. A low indication display low acidity on drums.

How to dispose of the battery?

Do not dump in the regular garbage. Batteries are hazardous to the environment, its acid sulphur and lead content is toxic to the floor, man and animal alike. Be sure to take them to the nearest battery when you buy a new. Batteries are recyclable, so you can use this to get a discount by the dealer.

There you have, simple, right?
